They are also among the least disruptive major projects — most of the work happens above the ceiling line, accessed from scaffolding, with the breakthrough into the house coming late in the programme.

Choose a rear extension when you need shared space: the bigger kitchen, the open-plan family room, the connection to the garden. Extensions change how the whole household lives together, and they usually deliver the bigger transformation in day-to-day life. They involve more groundwork and more disruption at ground level, but the result is the room everyone actually gathers in.
